We need your help to support the 17th annual Gay Straight Youth Pride Celebration on May 14th, 2011! Every May the Boston Common fills with thousands of enthusiastic and prideful gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth and their allies from all over Massachusetts for the annual Youth Pride March and Festival. This event is the oldest and largest youth pride event in the country. Youth Pride is a fundamental life-saving program that has carried on for 16 years with the help of The Friends of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth, Inc. (‘The Friends’).

Youth Pride is important in a state where GLBT youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than students who don’t identify as such (Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey). Having a supportive community has been shown to reduce many of the factors like isolation and depression that GLBT youth are prone to, and Youth Pride shows that there is a supportive community for those kids.

Please consider showing your personal support by pledging to a particular walker or a group that is marching at this year’s Youth Pride on May 14th, 2011! All the proceeds raised will go to The Friends, its Youth Pride and leadership development programming designed to combat GLBT suicide, alleviate isolationism and social stigma and bring information directly to the youth of Massachusetts. Your support of The Friends and suicide prevention is greatly appreciated.
